Sony e-Solutions is the direct sales portal for consumers shopping for Sony electronic products through the internet, contact centers and retail stores. In 2009, this highly competitive market totaled $170 billion in the U.S. alone.

The Challenge

Sony e-Solutions is an incredibly diverse and data intensive business. Orders, sales figures, inventory numbers and more pour into e-Solutions from a complex array of data sources—the sonystyle website, call centers, service centers, OracleERP, retail channels and more. The problem was that different eSolutions business units would organize, analyze and report on this data differently. This redundancy and inconsistency was not only costly, it created confusion. Different reports using the same data came to different conclusions. So no one could rely on the system to make business decisions.

The Bodhtree Solution

Bodhtree recognized that e-Solutions needed simplicity—a consistent system for gathering, analyzing and reporting on business operations. Our solution was ORBIT—a cutting-edge business intelligence system. This solution gave managers a dashboard with key metrics built-in to monitor daily business performance. It provided operational people with an integrated set of desktop and internet-based analytical tools for accessing information, analyzing performance, and producing accurate plans and reports.

Every night, ORBIT gathers all transactional data in one staging area. Using an Informatica-based ETL, the data is moved to a data mart where it is available for all to use. Using a cutting-edge suite of Cognos tools, managers can now analyze the data, get consistent results and create actionable plans. ORBIT allows them to monitor daily transactions and performance, and analyze operations from multiple perspectives. As a result, operational efficiencies skyrocketed. Within 90 days of installation, ORBIT increased sales 5%, cut the return rate for inside sales by 10%, and generated more than a half million dollars in savings by automating reporting and distribution.
