There has always been a conflict in defining the root cause of problems that envelop the data integrity. Is data quality a business problem or IT Problem? Will technology ever solve your data hygiene problems?
A problem related to the management of ‘master’ data in an enterprise is more acute than ever. Data quality is becoming more important as interoperability, supply chain, and compliance requirements increase.
For businesses the choice may be wide in the form of tools, solutions and Information Technology. The lack of a single consistent enterprise system to manage comprehensive master information results in incorrect answers in business intelligence undermining customer relationship management efforts. Business users some times may choose unsuitable tools or may not fully address or generate clean data (not knowing what the data should look like). Choosing unsuitable tools does not generate the desired result. However, when data is built on holistic and structured information, it provides a much fuller view of information. Data must therefore, align itself to the business in general and information technology in particular.
Maintaining data quality is not a one time process and has to be vigorously monitored for consistency and value. Different stake holders of an organization have different data needs. The importance of a data varies with time. Hence, data is an important asset of an organization.
